Town and Country Garden Club to Host Arbor Day Program at NW Park

Treba Porter

Arbor Day came about in 1872 when a man named J. Sterling Morton proposed the setting aside of a special day for the planting of trees. The Nebraska Board of Agriculture heard Sterling’s plea, and they approved the recognition of a special day, deemed Arbor Day.

On that day, one million trees were planted in the state of Nebraska.

Today, we celebrate Arbor Day in much the same way - planting trees, caring for existing trees, promoting education regarding the importance of trees.

This year, on February 26, the Town and Country Garden Club is planning an Arbor Day celebration not only to plant trees, but to honor two of the club’s members: Elaine Thompson and Noneine Thompson Keene. The club chose to plant trees at the Nanih Waiya Community Park. The celebration honoring Ms. Thompson and Mrs. Keene will kick off at noon. The Nanih Waiya High School FFA, under the leadership of West Watkins, will be on hand to assist.

Katie Shotts of the Winston County Extension Office will present a program at the event.

The Nanih Waiya Community Park is the first of its kind in Winston County, funding and upkeep carried out by members of the community. The park itself is growing. It is home to a community center, pavilion, and hosts multiple festivals throughout the year. The park is also currently constructing an event venue to expand its offerings for the community.
